Inspiration
After attending Proud teachers on Pride day, an informative British Council Live, I was inspired to create a lesson about one of my favourite artists, Tash Sultana.
Tash Sultana- a superstar
Tash Sultana (they/them) are an incredibly talented singer and musician who can play -wait for it- 20 instruments! If you don’t know them already, do yourself a favour and listen to at least two of their top songs ‘Jungle’ and ‘Notion’.
Why Tash?
I was particularly moved by Tash’s interview in Rolling Stone magazine. They were talking about a dream they had; there was a scorpion, a white and a black jaguar and the way Tash interpreted this dream was the following:
- The scorpion represents their self-loathing.
- The white jaguar represents their need for self-compassion.
- The black jaguar represents their insecurity.
After reading it, I just really wanted to share that story.
I used texts from:
The lesson
The lesson is for B2+ students. Timing 75-90 mins.
🎯 The main aim of the lesson..
is to raise awareness of the concept of a non-binary/gender fluid identity and to challenge learners’ preconceived notions about gender.
✅ Linguistic aims
To draw learners’ attention to :
- a range of lexical chunks found in the text
- pronunciation features, such as stress and connected speech
🗣️ Skills
To enable students to express topic-related thoughts and ideas, with a particular focus on fluency.
I used Chat GPT to generate the definitions for exercise 5. I also asked it to generate discussion questions. I kept some and changed some. It did help save some time though.

📝 Remember..
I create and share lessons with my students’ needs in mind. You may need to adapt them to better suit the specific needs of your learners.
💬🗨️Feedback..
is always welcome!
A great way to discover her art is to watch her Tiny Desk concert, https://youtu.be/GVDJ8O3lPBA
On the set list:
>Jungle
>Notion
>Blackbird
